The PEI Rating is an industry-standard scale that measures a tile’s surface durability and resistance to wear. While the scale goes from 1 to 5, it is important to remember that porcelain is one of the most durable man-made materials on earth.
For the vast majority of residential projects, you don't need "airport-grade" tile to get a lifetime of use. When a high-quality porcelain tile is installed properly, it is designed to last for decades without showing signs of wear.
A Realistic Guide for Your Home:
- Wall Tile (PEI 1-2): Specifically designed for backsplashes and shower walls. These prioritize beautiful glazes and textures over foot-traffic durability.
- Standard Residential (PEI 3): The "sweet spot" for most homes. This rating is more than enough for kitchens, hallways, and bathrooms. It will easily handle the daily life of a busy family.
- Heavy Residential/Commercial (PEI 4-5): Recommended for "shoes-on" areas, mudrooms, or homes with large pets.
