How much extra tile (overage) should I order
For most projects, we recommend ordering 10% to 15% more tile than your actual square footage requires. This "overage" is essential for a successful installation and long-term peace of mind.
Why you need overage:
- Cuts and Waste: Your installer will need to cut tiles to fit along walls, corners, and around plumbing fixtures. This process naturally creates waste.
- Complex Patterns: If you are installing tile in a complex pattern like Herringbone or Chevron, we recommend increasing your overage to 20% due to the higher number of diagonal cuts required.
- Dye Lot Consistency: Tile is produced in "batches" or "dye lots." If you run out of tile and need to order one more box, there is a risk that the new box will come from a different lot and may not be a 100% color match to your original order.
- Attic Stock: Keeping a small amount of extra tile on hand after your project is finished is the best way to ensure you have a perfect match for any potential future repairs.
