Wayne Tile Company was founded in 1955 by Bob Westra. A few years later, his brothers, Harry and Don, joined the business to collaborate their efforts. From the start, the three brothers rented a small garage space for storage and had a selection of three different color tiles (no borders, no matching floor, and only one type of bullnose). Establishing their business, they sold and installed the tiles themselves as a service to builders. After making themselves well known in the construction industry, they opened a small retail and storage space in Wayne, New Jersey. In 1963, they had their grand opening of the first official 'Wayne Tile Company store' at 1459 Route 23 South, where it remains today.

As years went by, Wayne Tile Company, began to filter itself out of the installation business, and concentrated their efforts solely on the importing and selling of tiles. As the business grew, a second location was added in Sussex County in 1974. It was at that same time, when the second generation (the young kids who used to be playing and working in the warehouses) expressed their own interests in the company. Bob Jr., Wayne, Don Jr., Timothy, Michael, Glenn and John became part of the Wayne Tile Company team. In 1987, a third retail location was added in Rockaway, New Jersey. In 2002, a warehouse was built at 2 Doig Road in Wayne, and, along with that, an official office building with a high-end Design Center below it, located directly behind the Wayne store.

In 2006, Wayne Tile Company was given the prestigious Assopiastrelle American Distributor Award for its excellence in fair-trade practices and good relationships with the Italian manufacturers. The award was also given to Wayne Tile Company for its volume of importing and distributing Italian tiles here in America and for Wayne Tile Company's preferences in the selection of aesthetic and technical qualities of Italian tiles. (You can find the article about the award hanging in our Design Center Showroom.) Recently, 50 Spring Street in Ramsey has been added to Wayne Tile Company's roster of showrooms. You will still find the founding father's of Wayne Tile Company roaming the stores from time to time.

What once started from a small garage in 1955, has been combined to 110,000 square feet of warehouse space. Wayne Tile Company now has over 400 lines of products in-stock from around the globe.
